- Moderating is a perk of status the member actually wants, not a quota.
When it stops being fair
- The server generates revenue: memberships, a product, a paid creator community.
- Mods work scheduled shifts, hit hour targets, or face consequences for missing them.
- The workload resembles a part-time job. Ten-plus structured hours a week is employment in all but name.
What healthy communities do
They match the arrangement to reality. Hobby servers run volunteer teams with light expectations. Revenue-generating servers pay their staff, even modestly, because paid staff stay longer, take the work seriously, and can be held to standards.
