GuidesAnywhere people look for work, scammers show up pretending to offer it. Discord is no exception. The good news: nearly every fake job offer follows one of a handful of scripts, and once you know them they are easy to spot.
The common scripts
- Pay-to-work: you are "hired", then asked to pay for equipment, training, a verification fee, or Nitro to unlock the role. Real employers never charge you to start working.
- The overpayment: they "accidentally" send too much through PayPal or crypto and ask you to refund the difference. The original payment later reverses and you are out the money.
- The malware test task: a "game to beta test" or "portfolio checker" executable, often disguised as a job requirement. It steals your Discord token and passwords.
- The QR code login: they ask you to scan a Discord QR code to "verify your identity". Scanning it logs them into your account.
- The fake platform: you are directed to sign in through a lookalike site to "complete your application". It harvests your credentials.
Red flags at a glance
- Any money flowing from you to them, ever, for any stated reason.
- Pay far above market for vague work. $500 per week to "watch chat occasionally" is not a job, it is bait.
- Pressure to move fast: the role "closes tonight" or they need you to act "right now".
- Refusal to communicate on the record. Legitimate posters are happy to keep things written down.
- Files you must run or QR codes you must scan before hiring.
How to protect yourself
- Never download and run files as part of an application. No real hiring process requires it.
- Never scan a Discord QR code someone sends you. There is no legitimate use of one in hiring.
- Check the server before trusting the offer. Join the invite, look at the member count, activity, and how long it has existed.
- Keep payment simple and after work is delivered, or milestone-based for bigger projects.
- Turn on two-factor authentication so a slipped password does not become a lost account.
